The State of Arizona

with Catherine Tambini, Co-Director/Co-Producer

7:00pm Screening 8:30pm Discussion

The documentary film The State of Arizona (2014) captures the explosive emotions and complex realities behind Arizona’s headline-grabbing struggle with illegal immigration. Tracking Arizona’s controversial “show me your papers” law all the way to the Supreme Court, the film tells the stories of Arizonans on all sides of this divisive issue.

Catherine Tambini, a resident of the Master Apartments since 2003 with her husband Peter Miller, is a documentary filmmaker who has focused both on immigration issues and the arts.
In addition to “The State of Arizona” she co-produced/co-directed the award-winning Farmingville (2004, Special Jury Prize, Sundance Film Festival) with collaborator Carlos Sandoval.

She also co-produced Suzanne Farrell: Elusive Muse, an Academy

Award-nominated documentary which premiered at the New York Film Festival and aired on PBS. She is currently working on a film on Isaiah Sheffer, who was the Artistic Director of Symphony Space, among his many other accomplishments, and Dance With Me, a film about children with severe physical challenges who are learning to dance with the help of teenage volunteers.

Playbill Recalls Equity Library Theater in Its Final Year at The Master

Pages from ELTPlaybill1989LR

The esteemed Equity Library Theater was housed at the Master Theatre from 1961 through its final season in 1989. This Playbill from a 1989 production of Gigi provides a detailed look at the high quality of the productions presented, even at the end of its 46 year run. From the NYPL Archives overview of the ELT archives: “The Equity Library Theatre (ELT) was a theatre company in New York City from 1943 to 1989, founded by actor Sam Jaffe, a representative of the Actor’s Equity Association, and George Freedley, curator of the Theatre Collection of the New York Public Library. ELT was dedicated to showcasing unemployed Equity actors in classic and modern plays and musicals and to provide free theatre to New Yorkers…Equity Library Theatre was founded as a showcase theatre which would give actors an opportunity to play, develop and grow in their craft. By producing only revivals, ELT was purely an actor’s theatre, rather than a producer’s tryout, a director’s experiment, or a playwright’s developmental project.”

This lost New York institution is memorialized in the stained glass window above the Master Theatre, which includes the masks of comedy and tragedy along with the initials “ELT.” Thanks to Rachel Yohannes for providing this Playbill.

The Sublet and Guest Policy is a policy about which many shareholders have strong opinions. This meeting has been scheduled to give shareholders an opportunity to share their views. The meeting will be moderated to ensure that all attendees who wish to speak are heard. While no decisions will be made at this meeting, it is an important session to make sure that all issues are uncovered, shareholders are heard and the discussion is thorough.

Shareholders unable to attend the meeting may communicate their views to the Board at: mastersboard@masterapts.com. The Board would appreciate receiving comments by Friday, January 30th, however comments will be accepted up until the meeting.
