Belmont (Monty) Freeman is principal of Belmont Freeman Architects, an award-winning design firm in New York City. Monty holds degrees from Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania. In independent practice since 1986, he has earned a wide reputation as an innovative designer, a progressive practitioner and a scholar. His work has received numerous awards and is regularly featured in the international design press. The firm’s varied portfolio includes projects for several major universities, New York City Opera, the James Beard Foundation, NYC Parks Department, and numerous commercial and private residential clients.
In recent years Monty Freeman has developed a specialty in the historic preservation of modern buildings. His firm’s renovation of the Zilkha Gallery at Wesleyan University (Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo Architects, 1970) won two AIA Awards. He is currently working on the restoration of The Four Seasons, the landmark 1959 restaurant in the Seagram Building by Philip Johnson.
From 1998 to 2007 Monty Freeman was the President of the Board of Directors of Storefront for Art & Architecture, an internationally known not-for-profit design gallery in New York City. Mr. Freeman is an adjunct professor of architecture at Columbia University, and a frequent guest critic at design schools throughout the country. He was named a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2008.

Monday Night at the Master’s Series
As a follow-up to the Open Studio event featuring our resident artists, and previous informational talks, a new series “Monday Night at the Master’s”, is being launched. The series will provide an opportunity for residents to give informal talks on their work, travels, hobbies, and/or other information that they think would be of interest. These can be individual presentations, or residents may want to consider joint presentations with other residents on related topics. Residents in the performing arts are also welcome to be a part of this series. In addition, we are considering hosting occasional musical concerts, if there’s interest among residents. Monty Freeman, Charles McKinney and David Hoos have graciously volunteered to get the series underway with talks about their work this spring.
